From the Podcast Curious Dimension with Matt Barone

Jennifer Stein on the Travis Walton UFO Case, Her Documentary & the Truth Behind the Debunkers: What really happened to Travis Walton in Arizona's Sitgreaves National Forest in 1975?

In this episode of the Curious Dimension Podcast, host Matt Barone speaks with filmmaker Jennifer Stein, director of Travis: The True Story of Travis Walton. Jennifer takes us deep into one of the most famous and controversial UFO abduction cases in history.

Jennifer explains what inspired her to create the documentary and why she felt it was important to preserve the firsthand accounts of Travis Walton and the six other members of the logging crew who witnessed the mysterious craft. On November 5, 1975, seven loggers traveling through Arizona's Sitgreaves National Forest encountered a large, hovering disc-shaped object.

According to the witnesses, Travis Walton exited the truck and approached the craft before being struck by a powerful beam of light. Walton disappeared for five days, triggering a massive search, intense police scrutiny, and widespread suspicion surrounding the entire logging crew.

Jennifer discusses the aftermath of the incident, including the polygraph examinations taken by the witnesses and the differences between the real case and Hollywood's portrayal in Fire in the Sky. We also explore Travis Walton's extraordinary memories of what allegedly happened during those missing five days.

His accounts include mysterious medical procedures, encounters with non-human beings, human-looking figures, and a bizarre sequence of events inside what he described as an otherworldly environment. Jennifer also discusses the decades of attempts to debunk the case, including claims involving UFO skeptic Philip Klass, alleged efforts to pressure or discredit witnesses, and the controversy surrounding the Travis Walton story more than 50 years later.

Was the Travis Walton case one of the most credible UFO encounters in history—or one of the most misunderstood? Join us as we explore the witnesses, the evidence, the controversy, and the story behind Jennifer Stein's documentary. ⏱️

Travis: The True Story of Travis Walton is a multiple award-winning documentary film.

Synopsis: Driving home after a day of clearing underbrush in the Sitgreaves National Forest, seven loggers come upon a 25-foot-wide shiny disc hovering on the crest of a ridge in the Turkey Springs Valley. Twenty-one-year-old Travis Walton jumps from the passenger side of their work truck and runs toward the craft for a closer look. That decision on November 5, 1975, would change him and the other six loggers forever.

Travis’s story became a book called Fire in the Sky and a 1993 Hollywood movie by the same name. The Paramount Pictures feature film fictionalized parts of the Walton UFO encounter for dramatic effect. At the same time, this Hollywood film made Travis’s story quite famous. Today, the Travis Walton UFO story remains one of the most well-documented cases of all time.

Jennifer W. Stein has made a definitive documentary film about Travis Walton and his UFO encounter. This film has been featured at a number of commemorative anniversary UFO events known as the Sky Fire Summit. Visit www.Skyfiresummit.com.

The film recounts the experiences of the work crew that day in the forest in 1975 and has become world-famous as one of the most credible and well-documented UFO events of the 20th century. It follows how the loggers and Travis struggled to make sense of the event while enduring humiliation and accusations of facilitating a hoax—accusations that continue to this day.

Since Travis has continued to encounter lifelong ridicule regarding his experiences, a number of credible researchers, writers, and investigators created a November 6, 2021, Sky Fire Summit online event to present their testimony, research, and evidence in support of the known facts of the case. This full day of presentations has been beautifully archived and preserved online for anyone to watch for free. Please find the links below:

The Evidence is in the Tree Rings

In 2021 the Travis documentary became available on Amazon Prime in multiple languages, creating a renewed interest in this highly complex and controversial UFO story from 1975.

Interestingly, just about that same time, a renewed effort by a few highly motivated and well-funded individuals to discredit this case began in full force on two continents. Are these synchronicities related? Maybe?

Hence there has been an international outcry of requests for the makers of this film to post some unedited raw footage of interviews archived for this documentary. Below are some interesting short and long interview segments filmed in 2013 and 2014, recounting the first-hand witness testimonies of the police and logging crew members who revisited the site with Travis and the filmmakers.

This 2014 - Forest Site Review with Ben Hansen, Travis Walton, Jennifer W. Stein, and Gary Hilton was made for the documentary film Travis: The True Story of Travis Walton. Ben Hansen, a former FBI agent,  documented the evidence he found in the forest in 2014. While on site, Ben, Travis, and Jen made a startling realization captured on film. In August 2014, this site review field study was completed on the 1975 UFO encounter location.  While they did not expect to find anything unusual, they did want to film and document the remains that existed in the forest in 2014, anticipating vandalism in the future.  Interestingly, while on site, Ben, Jen, and Travis made an additional unique discovery; they discovered that the standing tree stumps surrounding the location of the craft site showed directional increased rapid growth still visible from 1975.

The standing tree stumps exhibited rapid tree growth facing where the craft had hovered rather than the opposite side of the tree.  These stumps had been cut following the 2006 Rodeo Chediski fire.

(This type of discovery could not have been made before 2006. The Rodeo Chediski fire destroyed most of the trees on the ridge where the UFO encounter took place.) Now, the rapid tree growth appeared easily visible like standing tabletops on the surface of the cut stump, where before, only small pie-shaped samples were taken to avoid killing the trees.

Crew boss Mike Rogers,  in 1992, sampled several sides of the trees at the UFO encounter spot. He meant to determine rapid increase growth. Why? In 1992, Travis Walton and Mike Rogers went to the site with a film crew, wanting to film the site in the middle of a snowstorm. They had a hard time locating the site under several feet of snow. An additional problem prevailed. They determined that in the area where they thought the UFO had been, the trees seemed to have grown much larger than the surrounding forest. This made it extra difficult for them to locate the spot in the middle of the winter. Eventually, they saw the trees were larger in comparison to the surrounding forest.

This forced Mike Rodgers to return to the site in the spring and begin sampling some of the trees in the area. He discovered rapid tree growth. In 2014, long after the Rodeo Chedeski fire, these older tree stumps had been cut, now offering a unique tabletop view of the rapid growth rings. With a top-down view, these rapid growth rings now showed clear directionality that could not have been understood before. Moreover, the rapid growth was different on each of these trees where the UFO craft had been hovering.

This discovery inspired Ben Hansen, a former FBI agent, to review scientific papers documenting rapid tree growth and its cause. He cited a paper on Scott Pine trees around the Chernobyl nuclear accident that showed a unique consistent percentage of rapid tree growth over 15 years, not due to increased sunlight. (For some reason, increased radiation encourages tree wood pulp to grow 33.3 % faster as the tree attempts to kick off the increased exposure to radiation.) The increased growth also resists wood rot, similarly visible 50 years later at the Sitgreaves Forest site.

Podcaster Patrick James and his film crew came to the forest in December 2024, discovering that someone may have attempted to destroy this evidence, suspecting that the destruction took place around November 2021.

George Knapp was interviewed by Peter Robbins for the TRAVIS documentary film in August 2014. This video clip is the raw footage of this entire interview posted for the public to understand George’s ideas about this important 1975 UFO event.

George is a multi-award-winning news anchor at KLAS TV in Las Vegas, Nevada. As a mainstream journalist, he has bravely covered the UFO subject, breaking the story of Bob Lazar in the 1990s before anyone would touch the subject.

Steve Pierce describes watching Walton being hit by a beam of light knocking Travis to the ground.

There are many who claim this event never happened as the logging crew has described it many times before, even today.

Travis has encountered lifelong ridicule regarding his experiences. In this rare candid clip, Steve Pierce and Travis Walton discuss their memories as they retrace the drive the logging crew took each day to get to the forest site.

Filmmaker Jen Stein captures footage while she drives. Steve recounts watching Travis hit the ground, and how the whole crew assumed he was dead. Steve states they saw the craft leave the forest so when they returned to get Travis medical help, and he was missing, the crew began to think maybe the craft had taken Travis away.

Steve Pierce and Travis Walton discuss working on a logging contract with Mike Rogers in 1975.

Jennifer Stein captured this short film clip while driving to the forest site with Steve Pierce and Travis Walton. They were filming the TRAVIS documentary in August 2013.

The visuals are a bit jumpy as Stein was driving with one hand while holding the camera with the other. She was not looking at the camera lens, but instead shooting blind. The audio remains clear as Pierce and Walton discuss the logging contract and the hours they were working and the route they took to work each day.

Travis Walton speaks about the ridicule he has faced for decades.

Ben Hansen interviews Walton in this brief clip during the filming for the 2014 forest site review done for this documentary film. In this raw unedited clip, you hear Walton how he and the loggers have struggled to make sense of the event enduring humiliation, and accusations of hoaxing this event. Travis has encountered lifelong ridicule regarding his experiences. He explains how he had to grow a tough skin.

A brief description of the polygraph used on the logging crew after Walton's disappearance (from TRAVIS documentary film.)

This short rough-cut film clip was part of an early edit of the polygraph section of the film. Some segments  did not fully make it into the finished film. The clip includes comments from logging crew members Mike Rogers, Steve Peirce, and John Goulette, about taking and passing the polygraph test.

Nat Gordon, the American Polygraph association president in 2012, describes the likelihood that seven men could take a polygraph test and pass on the same questions as astronomical. He said that is beyond a million-to-one chance that they are not telling the truth.

“Travis- The True Story of Travis Walton” is the definitive documentary film about a 45-year history of events resulting from a startling UFO encounter in November 1975 which forever changed the lives of seven loggers who witness this event.

The years of sworn testimony, multiple polygraph examinations, numerous specialists looking at this data over decades, along with physical trace evidence, provide the preponderance of evidence enabling this case to be considered one of the most significant UFO cases ever.

The facts surrounding this case continued to reveal pieces of evidence, year after year, as diss informants continue to try to invent alternative stories to explain it away.

This clip is raw footage taken in the forest during the filming for the documentary.

It is an important testimony of two additional witnesses to the UFO craft by a hunter and his wife. After 15 years,  they came forward to speak with Walton so that he might know their story.

There are many who claim this event never happened even as the logging crew have described it many times before. When Walton could not be found after a multi-day manhunt, the logging crew came under suspicion of murder.

To prove their innocence, they agreed to polygraph examinations. When they passed the polygraphs, the police were forced to consider their sworn testimony seriously: they all encountered a stunning UFO disc-shaped craft in the forest on November 5, 1975.

In this short candid clip, Steve Peirce accompanies Travis Walton back to the forest site to explain and confirm the events of their UFO sighting. Some dis-informants have claimed the hill and ridge line was so high that from the logging road, you could not see to the top of the ridge line.

As you can see from this video clip, it is quite easy to see the top of this hill at the ridge line. Many people have claimed this event never happened as it did, they propose new ideas and explanations to fit their own narrative.

While it is important to remain skeptical of wild tales, this is one tale you’re going to want to know the facts about. It is one of the most well-documented and most highly contested UFO stories in modern-day history.

Recently disinformants have claimed these "Thank-You-M'am" road embankments exist on the smooth-surfaced gravel rim road known as route 300 on google maps. This is incorrect. The logging crew assert that the road humps are only on the old logging forest roads in the forest.

When small details such as these embankments on the logging road become contested, the public who has never been to the site can become confused. To create clarity, this short raw footage of Travis and Ken Peterson walking over these Thank-You-M'am humps in the road with Ben Hansen shows what they look like.

Historically these have only existed on the old forest logging road. Bumps like this have never existed on the gravel rim road route 300; the gravel road route 300 is designed to drive at considerable speed, and embankments of this type would damage the undercarriage of a vehicle driven at high speed.

Travis has encountered lifelong ridicule regarding his experiences. This is a rare candid clip of Ken Peterson and Travis Walton discussing their memories as they retrace the drive the logging crew took each day to get to the forest work site. There are many who claim this event never happened as the logging crew have described it many times before, even today.

Sheriff Marlin Gillespie was interviewed at his home in Holbrook Arizona by Travis Walton and filmmaker Jennifer W. Stein, on August 4, 2014. The purpose was to allow Marlin to recount his experiences investigating the missing persons's case of Travis Walton reported on November 5, 1975.

Marlin’s complete interview makes it easy to understand the facts of this case (continually discounted by misinformed individuals.) Marlin states the Arizona prison system assigned tracking dogs to help in the multi-day manhunt. When we turned the camera off, Marlin could not wait to finally tell Travis about one of his own significant UFO experiences which happened shortly after Travis’s event.
